Since 1987, Fang Chemicals successfully served the full phosphoric acid market—supporting applications such as food and beverage additives, water and wastewater treatment, and metal cleaning and surface finishing, as well as end-markets including sugar refineries and other industrial sectors—until Fang Phos resumed this service line circa 2018.

Phosphoric Acid and Purified Phosphoric Acid
Phosphoric acid, also known as orthophosphoric acid, is a mineral acid with the chemical formula known as H3PO4. Pure, anhydrous phosphoric acid is a white solid which melts at 42 degrees Celsius to form a viscous liquid. Commonly used phosphoric acid is an aqueous solution of 75-85% which is generally produced by two different processes: Wet Process and Thermal Process.

Wet Process Phosphoric Acid (WPA):

WPA is obtained by reacting phosphate rock with sulfuric acid to yield "crude" phosphoric acid and gypsum as a byproduct. Wet Process is the dominant method for producing phosphoric acid. WPA contains various impurities and its main use is for agricultural applications.

Thermal Process Phosphoric Acid (TPA):

TPA is produced by burning elemental phosphorous (P4) in the air to produce phosphorous penta-oxide (P2O5) which is further dissolved in dilute phosphoric acid to make 75% - 85% product. Thermal process is an extremely energy intensive process for making phosphoric acid. This process has been phased out by many countries because of the cost except China and Russia. 

Purifications have been developed in recent years to purify the “crude” WPA into higher quality phosphoric acid for various industrial and food applications.  They are referred as Purified Phosphoric Acid (PPA). As a result, Fang Phos has established relationships with various sources of PPA suppliers to meet the changing demands of the market, offering PPA 85%, 80%, 75% or lower concentrations.
