Background: Phosphoric Acid is the standard for Aluminum Bright Dip

Historically, high-quality 80–85% food-grade phosphoric acid has been the standard acid for aluminum bright dip solutions. This preference existed because the price gap between food-grade and technical-grade material was traditionally negligible.

Market Context and Volatility

However, phosphoric acid prices have experienced extreme volatility over the past decade. Costs are driven primarily by fluctuations in raw materials (phosphate rock and sulfur), surging energy prices, and global fertilizer supply chain disruptions.

Following a stable period from 2016 to 2019 (~$600 - $700/MT) and the COVID-19 period from 2020 to 2021 (~$700 -$750/MT), prices spiked to historic highs in 2022 to 2023 (~$1200 - $1800/MT) due to geopolitical tensions and energy crises. By 2024–2025, the market stabilized at a significantly higher "new normal" of about $900 - $1,100/MT of phosphoric.

2026 Market Outlook

  • Reduced Chinese Exports: China has significantly curtailed phosphate exports, tightening global supply.

  • Geopolitical Premiums: Trade tariffs and logistics disruptions in key shipping routes (affecting Moroccan and Russian imports) have added a permanent "risk premium" to current costs.

  • Industrial Competition: Demand for high-purity acid is surging, driven by the semiconductor industry and the production of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries for electric vehicles.

The Economic Question

Food-grade acid currently commands a "purity premium" of 20% to 40%, depending on the region. Given this substantial price gap, is it still technically necessary or economically viable to use food-grade phosphoric acid for aluminum bright dip formulations?

Fang Brite Dip

Fang Brite Dip, a subsidiary of Fang Phos, has been created in 2026 to focus on our mission of providing innovative value and service to aluminum anodizing customers.  We pioneered a new recipe for our conventional bright dip solution, 80FC, using Fang PPA replacing food-grade phosphoric acid to stay competitive with industrial giants like “Nutrien”.

Fang’s PPA (purified phosphoric acid) is purified by chemical and mechanical methods of recycled phosphoric acid and high-quality liquid fertilizers.  It is a clear solution of 85% phosphoric acid that is perfect for use in aluminum bright dip applications.  We distribute our innovative products across the United States and Mexico from our manufacturing location in Georgia.
